Petri Dish Project @ Tebbs Gallery
This is a rather belated blog post as the physical exhibition for this Petri Dish Project happened back in the summer at the Tebbs Gallery in Spitalfields but the virtual exhibition space is still live and in some ways easier to view as you get to see the petri dishes enlarged at a far larger scale.
The Petri Dish Project involved 60 artists reinterpreting what could be shown in a petri dish by exploring various environmental, social and scientific themes. All work had to be presented in an actual petri dish.
I found it quite intriguing working at such a small scale and having consistency of scale across all artists within one exhibition. My dish was, predictably, inspired by new discoveries from the deep ocean. The petri dish idea seemed quite fitting as so many species remain unknown in the deep ocean and have never seen the inside of a petri dish.
So this is my interpretation - “Midnight Zone” of what might be lurking undiscovered in the darkness of the deep sea.
The virtual exhibition can be viewed here and a book of the exhibition is also due to be published shortly.
