Saatchi Lates and screening of 'Descent to the Abyss'

Excited that my video ‘Descent to the Abyss’ will be screened tonight as part of the Saatchi Lates series. The gallery is staying open until 9pm tonight and there will be a series of screenings and performances happening across the London Grads Now. 21 exhibition. A great opportunity to see all the work on display alongside extra events.

This video was inspired by James Cameron’s epic descent in a submersible to the bottom of the Mariana Trench (almost 7 miles down). More people have stood on the moon than reached the deepest reaches of the ocean so to reach such immense depths is a significant achievement. Evolution has taken a very different approach to cope with the intense dark and immense pressures and some of the creatures do appear like alien life forms but of course they are not. They are part of our amazing global ecosystem and live in the largest habitat on earth.

I created this video by making a sketch of a different deep sea creature/feature for every minute of descent (96 mins). Not all made the final cut but it was an enjoyable process to realise just what diversity of life exists in the deep ocean. And that is just what we have discovered so far. It’s thought that 90% of ocean species remain unknown.
