'Structure' exhibition at Cupola Contemporary Art
My self-imposed break from exhibiting and showing work has come to an end! I’ve really enjoyed the last year of experimenting with different things without the pressure to make consistent work for exhibitions. But last week I decided it was time to get back into sharing work. This piece has been sitting above my desk in my studio for a few months now and It is one of my favourite paint collages.
The theme of the exhibition is ‘Structure’ which links very well with my approach to making work. My paintings explore structure through the ways landscapes are observed, mapped and reconstructed. I am particularly intrigued by the unseen and extreme, from imagined exploration along the sea floor to taking a bird’s-eye view of the landscape. Maps fascinate me as systems that impose structure on the world and shape our understanding of place.
This painting, “Alpine”, is intended to be the first in a series of paintings exploring the structure of mountainous landscapes and the different ways we map and perceive them. The painting draws on the natural geometry of alpine terrain (ridges, valleys, contours and shifting perspectives) reimagining the landscape through a fragmented, almost aerial viewpoint. Built from individually placed marks and fragments of paint, the work reflects the process of mapping: a complex landscape broken down into smaller elements and reconstructed as an image. The resulting structure sits between the physical and the imagined, suggesting both the experience of standing within a landscape and the detached perspective of viewing it from above. Through this fragmented approach, Alpine considers how maps, satellite imagery and other systems of representation can transform a place into a pattern of lines, shapes and data, while still retaining traces of the physical landscape beneath.
The exhibition dates are 12th September to 10th October 2026 at Cupola Contemporary Art, Sheffield.
